Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield.
It's the Merseyside derby with local pride at stake. Sam Allardyce faces his side's biggest rivals in only his second game in charge of Everton. The club got off to a good start under his reign with a 2-0 win over Huddersfield last week, while the Toffees brushed aside Limassol during the week in the Europa League. They've not won at Anfield since 1999 and today would be a good day to break their poor record to create further distance between them and the teams at the bottom.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
Jurgen Klopp's men can move above Chelsea into third place in the Premier League with a victory this afternoon. The Reds are unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions and are in prime scoring form, having put five goals past Brighton last week in their 5-1 win at the Amex Stadium and their 7-0 hammering of Spartak Moscow during the week. Klopp will be hopeful of a similar performance as Everton have been suspect at the back this season.
Klopp makes a huge decision to leave Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino out of his starting line-up this afternoon. The two Brazilian's have been an integral part of the attacking unit along with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah this season, but he has opted to start Dominic Solanke and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in their place. Jordan Henderson and James Milner come into the middle of the park, while Andrew Robertson replaces Alberto Moreno at left-back.
STAT ATTACK! Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 14 games in all competitions against Everton – just one game short of their longest-ever such run against their Merseyside rivals (15, set between March 1972 and April 1978).
Allardyce has named one change to the side that beat Huddersfield in the Premier League last time out. Oumar Niasse gets the start to spearhead the attack, with Aaron Lennnon the player dropping out of the team. Mason Holgate continues to start over Michael Keane and Phil Jagielka after impressing in the heart of the defence in their last two matches. Tom Davies is preferred to Morgan Schneiderlin in the middle of the park.
STAT ATTACK! Everton are winless in 17 successive Premier League visits to Anfield (D8 L9), since a 1-0 win in September 1999 thanks to a Kevin Campbell strike.
FLASHBACK! Liverpool defeated Everton 3-1 in this fixture last season. Mane put the Reds ahead, only for Matthew Pennington to equalise. However, Coutinho restored the advantage for Klopp's men before Divock Origi secured the game in the second half.
The players are out on the pitch, so we should be underway shortly.
HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 1-0 EVERTON
Liverpool hold a 1-0 lead at half-time in the Merseyside derby against Everton thanks to Mohamed Salah's strike in the 42nd minute. The Toffees had performed a fine rearguard action to thwart Jurgen Klopp's men for the majority of the half. However, the Egyptian conjured a moment of magic to bend his effort into the top corner to break the stalemate. Liverpool deserve to be ahead and the goal will force Everton out of their defensive shape, which should bring an enthralling second half at Anfield.
Changes are coming for Everton as the players emerge for the second half.
FULL-TIME: LIVERPOOL 1-1 EVERTON
Liverpool are furious at the full-time whistle with referee Craig Pawson, but they should be annoyed with themselves. The Reds dominated the contest, but emerge with only a point as Wayne Rooney's second-half penalty cancelled out Mohamed Salah's opener. The hoe side probed away in the second half, but couldn't get the decisive goal to kill off the contest. Everton kept the game alive and were rewarded when Rooney converted from the spot. It's two points dropped for Liverpool, but another sign of the Toffees' resurgence under Sam Allardyce by claiming a vital draw.
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
