Manchester City suffered a humbling defeat during the week at the hands of Lyon at the Etihad Stadium in their Champions League opener. City were off the pace and were punished by the French outfit as Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir found the net. Pep Guardiola's men have been imperious in the Premier League, although they are two points off the pace of Liverpool and Chelsea as a result of their draw against Wolves. The club completed a routine win over Fulham last time out and will be looking for a similar result this afternoon.
Cardiff have not enjoyed their return to the Premier League, failing to a record a win in their opening five matches. The Bluebirds have claimed only two points, which came from their draws against Newcastle and Huddersfield Town. Neil Warnock's men are massive underdogs this afternoon as the reigning champions come into town.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Cardiff and Manchester City at Cardiff City Stadium.
Let's take a look at the two sides this afternoon, starting with Cardiff.
CARDIFF (4-4-1-1): Neil Etheridge; Lee Peltier, Sean Morrison, Bruno Ecuele Manga, Greg Cunningham; Victor Camarasa, Harry Arter, Joe Ralls, Junior Hoilett; Bobby Reid; Danny Ward.
Cardiff subs: Joe Bennett, Jazz Richards, Kenneth Zohore, Josh Murphy, Callum Paterson, Sol Bamba, Brian Murphy.
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Nicolas Otamendi, Aymeric Laporte, Fabian Delph; Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane.
Manchester City subs: Vincent Kompany, John Stones, David Silva, Riyad Mahrez Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden, Arijanet Muric.
Cardiff have made two changes from their defeat at the hands of Chelsea last week. Cunningham and Peltier come into the side in the full-back positions as Ecuele Manga moves into the heart of the defence. Bamba and Bennett drop to the bench for the Bluebirds.
Otamendi, Sane and Aguero come into the side from the defeat against Lyon as Guardiola makes three changes to his side. Bernardo Silva drops into a deeper role to allow Sane and Sterling to partner Aguero in the final third.
After a slow start to the contest, Manchester City came to life after Sergio Aguero put them ahead and are surely on their way to securing the three points against Cardiff this afternoon. City were held in check for the opening 30 minutes, but a well crafted move between Ilkay Gunodgan and Bernardo Silva opened up space for Aguero to score. Silva doubled City's advantage, looping a header over Neil Etheridge into the net from Leroy Sane's cross. Just before half-time Gundogan unleashed a special strike from 20 yards, blasting his effort into the top corner.
Cardiff were simply powerless to stop City when they get going in the final 15 minutes of the half. Neil Warnock's men were resilient in the early stages of the game, but lacked the threat on the counter to put the visitors under pressure. Once again the quality of a top Premier League outfit has punished Cardiff for the second week on the bounce.
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Manchester City bounce back from their Champions League defeat with an emphatic victory over Cardiff City this afternoon. Sergio Aguero opened the scoring after an underwhelming start to the contest from Pep Guardiola's men. However, after the breakthrough it was all one-way traffic. Bernardo Silva added a second two minutes after Aguero's effort, while Ilkay Gundogan made it three with a stunner before half-time. Riyad Mahrez notched his first City goal after entering the action from the bench and he made it five with a strike to cap off the win just before full-time.
