Three minutes have been added on, which we have now officially played. Madrid are asking all of the questions but have run out of time to find a winner.
90' +2
Marcos Llorente gets yellow.
Llorente fouls Kroos and becomes the sixth player to be cautioned in this lively second half.
90' +1
OVER! Modric, and not Kroos alongside him, takes on the free-kick. It is a strange technique with the outside of his boot and ends a good yard or so over the bar.
90'
S. Savić gets yellow.
Kondogbia fouls Vazquez and Madrid have a free-kick around 20 yards from goal. Savic is cautioned for dissent.
88'
K. Benzema has scored a goal for Real Madrid! Assist by Casemiro.
GOOOOOAAAAALLL!!! ATLETICO MADRID 1-1 REAL MADRID!! Benzema missed two glorious chances a little earlier but he makes amends with a late equaliser. He shows great footwork to play in Casemiro and his team-mate - playing effectively as a second striker - returns the ball to set up the simplest of finishes for Benzema into an unguarded net.
Benzema's footwork was superb; Casemiro's calmness to return the pass to his team-mate was just as good. That is a fine goal.
87'
Remember, Atletico have failed to win any of their last nine LaLiga games against Madrid - that is about to change, unless Los Blancos can create one final opportunity late on.
86'
Atletico are penned in but are doing just about enough to keep their city rivals at arm's length. Kroos' shot from the edge of the box is blocked and then cleared by Hermoso.
84'
Suarez will take all the credit if the scoreline remains this way, but that double save from Oblak was equally as important. The home team are having to dig deep to preserve their one-goal lead as we enter the final six minutes of normal time.
82'
G. Kondogbia enters the game and replaces Á. Correa.
ANOTHER OBLAK SAVE! Benzema curls a 20-yard free-kick around the wall and on target. Oblak watches it all the way and pushes the ball to safety.
Correa makes way for Kondogbia as Simeone attempts to shore up his midfield.
Minute
Description
80'
João Félix gets yellow.
Joao Felix fouls Mendy just outside the penalty area and Madrid have a free-kick in a promising position.
79'
Suarez is clattered into, giving Atletico a chance to regroup for the free-kick. Will one goal be enough for the LaLiga leaders?
78'
Madrid are throwing bodies forward now, which is leaving plenty of gaps for Atleti to break into. Trippier makes a great challenge on Vinicius to halt the visitors' latest attack.
76'
BENZEMA GOES CLOSE! There is surely another goal in this game. Casemiro lets the ball roll through to Benzema and the striker's shot is about a yard off target. Casemiro asks his team-mate why he didn't play him in instead.
74'
GOOD EFFORT! Valverde has a go from range and forces Oblak into a rare save. The Atleti keeper got down to his left and it was a stop you would always expect him to make.
72'
Á. Correa gets yellow.
Vinicius blasts over from range and Benzema fails to bring the ball under control from the next attacking move. Madrid have been poor in attack today - and defence at times, too - yet they still have a chance of taking something from this match.
Correa fouls Mendy and is the latest Atletico player to be shown a yellow card.
70'
Atleti have had a few promising opportunities in this second half to double their lead. Will those missed chances come back to haunt them? Madrid have around 20 minutes to find a response.
68'
SUAREZ DENIED! Joao Felix has not taken long to settle into the game. He cuts the ball back for Suarez, whose low shot lacks any sort of power or precision to beat Courtois.
67'
R. Varane gets yellow.
Varane is cautioned for a strong challenge on Suarez.
64'
João Félix enters the game and replaces Y. Carrasco.
Y. Carrasco gets yellow.
Carrasco is booked by the referee, seemingly because he took so long to exit the field when being substituted.
Joao Felix is introduced by Simeone for the final 25 minutes or so. Carrasco is the player to make way.
62'
Llorente heads the ball into the air and Correa is first to it, but he gets his contact all wrong and fails to test Courtois. He likely would have been flagged for offside, anyway.
60'
F. Valverde enters the game and replaces Marco Asensio.
Vinícius Júnior enters the game and replaces Rodrygo.
Zidane makes a double change, with Valverde on for Asensio in the first of those substitutions.
Rodrygo, who has offered very little today, makes way for Vinicius with an hour played.
59'
Suarez decides to take on a shot from 20 yards - and you can hardly blame him - but it is dragged off target.
57'
Saúl enters the game and replaces T. Lemar.
Vazquez volleys high and wide from a Madrid corner. Atletico are about to make their first change.
Saul takes over from Lemar in the first of Atletico's changes.
55'
CHANCE! Madrid are playing a lot better now. A deep cross is missed by Benzema, who felt he was being held back, but Nacho gets his head to the ball behind him and nearly squeezes it in at the back post. A routine stop for Oblak in the end.
53'
Kroos catches everyone out by playing a wide free-kick to the edge of the box, where Vazquez is waiting to blast it into a sea of bodies.
51'
Vazquez's low cross from the right is cut out by the first man. The subsequent corner is also cleared by an Atletico player.
50'
Suarez steals the ball from Varane and thinks he is through on goal, but the referee pulls play back for a free-kick. The Atletico striker sees the funny side of it... I think.
48'
No changes were made by either manager at half-time, so it is as you were for now. Madrid have 45 minutes to effectively keep their title hopes alive.
46'
RESTART! Atletico, who are five points clear at the summit with a game in hand as things stand, get us back under way in the Spanish capital.
45' +3
HALF-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 1-0 REAL MADRID
45' +2
Lemar is challenged by Casemiro, who then boots his opponent when he is on the ground when attempting to get the ball. Sensing that things could escalate with the two minutes of added time up, the referee blows for half-time.
45'
Two minutes have been added on at the end of the first half at the Wanda Metropolitano.
41'
CHANCE! Suarez constantly seems to be in space, despite his close proximity to the opposition goal. A cross comes in from the right and the former Barcelona man volleys into the ground and on target - not an easy chance, that, it must be said.
39'
Rodrygo picks up the ball between the lines. Rather than drive towards goal, though, he plays a misplaced pass to Benzema on his right. I think that pretty much sums up the way this game has gone for Madrid so far.
37'
Reigning champions Madrid look well off the pace. The home team are a goal to the good and are in complete control of possession.
35'
Madrid have had more shots than their opponents - five to three - but Atletico are getting into the more dangerous positions. Bar a five-minute spell, Atleti have been on top from kick-off.
33'
Lemar is the latest Atletico player to get in behind Madrid's makeshift defence. His cutback is easily dealt with, though.
31'
Hermoso and Rodrygo tangle legs. The decision goes in Madrid's favour and Simeone is not pleased with that, the referee going over to give the Atletico coach a warning.
29'
SAVE! Madrid get a serious shot on target for the first time today, and it is a decent attempt from Casemiro. He watches the ball all the way and fires a volley on target from 20 yards, which Oblak is unable to get under control at the first attempt.
27'
After a sustained spell of Madrid possession, Atletico have been the side on top for the past five minutes. Rather than sending crosses into the box like their opponents, Simeone's men are trying to play a killer ball in behind.
25'
Suarez, who is having a great game, chips a delightful cross towards the back post but Carrasco cannot quite make contact with it.
24'
Another cross into the Atletico box, another glanced header wide from Benzema. The visiting team have had countless half-chances, but nothing clear-cut yet in front of goal.
22'
Trippier produces a good challenge to take the ball off Mendy. The returning full-back initially stays down but seems fine to continue.
21'
If there is one side in world football you do not want to be chasing a goal against, it is surely Atletico. Simeone's side are content to sit in and soak up the pressure, with Benzema guiding a header off target.
19'
Madrid have dominated possession since Suarez's opener. Atletico are likely to sit back now for the remainder of the game and protect what they have.
17'
SHOT! That goal has sparked Madrid into life. Asensio sends a cross in from the left and an unmarked Benzema meets it 12 yards out, but his first-time finish is an easy one for Oblak to deal with.
15'
L. Suárez has scored a goal for Atletico Madrid! Assist by Marcos Llorente.
Trippier passed the ball to Llorente and the versatile midfielder slotted the ball in behind the Madrid defence for Suarez to do the rest. Simple, yet incredibly effective play from Atletico.
GOOOOOAAAALLLL!!! ATLETICO MADRID 1-0 REAL MADRID!! Make that 10 goals in 13 league games for Suarez against Madrid! The striker holds his run and gets on the end of Llorente's throughball before firing past Courtois with a trademark outside-of-the-boot finish.
14'
Casemiro stamps on the boot of Llorente. The Atletico midfielder is hobbling at the moment but should be fine to continue.
13'
Madrid spend a minute or so knocking the ball around in defence and midfield before Modric gives it away under little pressure. The visitors have yet to put together a serious attack of note, though the same is true of their opponents.
10'
The onus is on reigning champions Madrid to pick up a win today, but they have not really got out of first gear in the early stages. Zidane's side, as expected, are going with their tried-and-tested 4-3-3.
8'
Modric, of all people, gets his head to the Atletico corner. The hosts actually appear to be operating with a 4-4-2 today, rather than the previously advertised 3-4-2-1.
6'
Suarez takes on the free-kick from a good 30 yards out. It clips the top of the wall and goes behind for the first corner of the contest.
4'
The home side are definitely looking to get in their opponents' faces from the off. Suarez tries to flick the ball in behind but is fouled by Varane before he can do so.
2'
Atleti are quick out of the blocks. Koke has a shot blocked from the edge of the area and Madrid eventually clear their lines.
1'
KICK-OFF! Madrid, who can close the gap on league leaders Atletico to two points with a victory today, get us up and running in the Spanish capital.
Welcome to our live text coverage of the LaLiga clash between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Atletico's form has been inconsistent of late, though they did beat Villarreal 2-0 last weekend to pick up a second win in five league outings. Diego Simeone's men enter this game with their bitter rivals two points clear of Barcelona at the top of LaLiga, having played two games fewer than their closest challengers.
Madrid's five-match winning run in the league was ended in a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad last Monday. Zinedine Zidane's side have been playing catch up for a number of months and are five points behind Atleti, whom they have played a game more than. This, then, is effectively a must-win clash for the visitors.
Subs: Sime Vrsaljko, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Renan Lodi, Vitolo, Lucas Torreira, Saul Niguez, Moussa Dembele, Joao Felix, Ivo Grbic.
REAL MADRID XI (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Lucas Vazquez, Raphael Varane, Nacho, Ferland Mendy; Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric; Rodrygo, Karim Benzema (c), Marco Asensio.
Subs: Marcelo, Federico Valverde, Eder Militao, Andriy Lunin, Isco, Vinicius Junior, Alvaro Odriozola, Hugo Duro, Diego Altube.
ATLETICO MADRID XI (3-4-2-1): Jan Oblak; Stefan Savic, Felipe, Mario Hermoso; Kieran Trippier, Marcos Llorente, Koke (c), Yannick Carrasco; Angel Correa, Thomas Lemar; Luis Suarez.
Both sets of players have made their way onto the field at the Wanda Metropolitano and kick-off in this Madrid derby is just moments away. This really is a huge clash at the top of LaLiga!
Madrid managed just one shot on target in the first half, compared to two for their opponents, and never truly looked like scoring. Zidane does not have a great deal of options on the bench, though Vinicius is a possible contender to come on at half-time. As for Atletico, Simeone will be after more of the same in the second 45.
That is all for today's live text coverage. Thanks for joining, goodbye!
Simeone's men were a few minutes from going five points clear at the top, but as it is their lead over Barcelona is just three points with a game in hand. Next up for Atletico is a home match against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, while Madrid - five points off top spot having played a game more than Atleti - host Elche on their return to action next weekend.
